EDITOR’S NOTE / UPDATE:
This article was originally written prior to fully accounting for FIFA’s confederation restrictions, which limit how many teams from the same region can be drawn into one group (with UEFA as the lone exception). In addition, since the original publication of this piece, the official World Cup draw has already taken place and Haiti’s group is now known. As a result, some of the projected group-stage scenarios discussed below are no longer applicable.
This article is therefore being preserved for its broader analytical purpose: to highlight the types of teams Haiti could realistically match up with in the knockout rounds, should the team advance. With the 2026 format allowing 12 group winners, 12 runners-up, and the 8 best third-place teams to reach the Round of 32, qualification for the knockout stage is a very plausible objective for Haiti. Should Haiti advance and encounter familiar regional opponents such as the United States, Canada, or Panama in the Round of 32, the tactical and historical dynamics discussed in this piece remain highly relevant.
The central message still stands: Haiti is not coming to this World Cup to participate — Haiti is coming to compete.
December 5 carries historical resonance for Haiti. 533 years ago, Christopher Columbus arrived on the island, setting events in motion that would shape its history. Today, the date takes on a very different kind of significance: the FIFA World Cup Final Draw.
On December 5, 2025, Haiti has the opportunity to turn a date marked by history into a moment it shapes through soccer. The FIFA World Cup 2026 Draw will determine which teams Haiti will face in the tournament next summer and could set the stage for a historic return to the World Cup.

Understanding the World Cup Draw
The 48 teams in the 2026 World Cup will be divided into twelve groups of four teams. Each group will include one team from each pot. Teams in Pot 1 are the strongest teams and include the host nations. Pot 2 and Pot 3 contain strong and mid-level international teams. Pot 4 includes emerging and lower-ranked teams, which is the pot in which Haiti is placed.

Mexico, Canada, and the United States are host countries and are automatically placed in Pot 1. They will each lead a group.
For Haiti, drawing the right teams from each Pot could be the difference between an early exit and a historic run.
Pot 1: Who Would Haiti Want to Face?
A matchup against a global powerhouse like France would make headlines for historical reasons, but Haiti’s best path lies in facing teams it already knows. The squad has a proven history of competing against familiar regional opponents, studying their style, and exploiting weaknesses. In soccer, experience, tactical knowledge, and familiarity can often outweigh sheer strength, especially when every goal and point matter.
The crucial question becomes: Which regional rival has Haiti historically been competitive against, and the team that could make a World Cup shock possible?
Haiti knows all three host teams in Pot 1, and the only team that Haiti has never defeated is Mexico. But against the other two, the story gets interesting.
Haiti vs Canada
Total Matches:
Haiti wins:2
Canada wins: 10
Draws: 2
Canada has the better overall record, while Haiti has a winning percentage of only 21.4%. Recently, however, Haiti achieved one of its most essential wins in history, defeating Canada 3–2 in the 2019 Gold Cup quarterfinal. This is mostly the same team with the same stars that Canada will take to the World Cup. Canada is strong and athletic, but far less overwhelming than elite European powers.
Haiti vs the United States
Total Matches:
Haiti wins: 6
USA wins: 8
Draws: 5

This gives Haiti a 31.6% win rate against the United States, the highest of any Caribbean country. Since 2004, Haiti has played the United States five times in tournaments and friendlies, earning draws in 2004 and 2009 and losing by only one goal the last three matches.
Best Pot 1 Options for Haiti
- Primary: United States
- Secondary: Canada
These are the only Pot 1 teams Haiti can realistically approach with experience-based confidence rather than blind optimism.
Pot 2: Teams Haiti Can Possibly Match Up With
Pot 2 includes strong teams such as Croatia, Uruguay, Morocco, Colombia, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. Most of these teams would control possession and push Haiti into long defensive stretches.
However, a few teams present more realistic tactical opportunities.
Australia
Australia is physically strong but not highly technical. They often struggle against fast, compact teams that rely on counterattacks, which fits Haiti’s natural playing style.
Iran
Iran is well structured defensively but has limited attacking creativity. Haiti’s speed on the wings and transition play could cause problems for them.
Haiti vs Asian Pot 2 Teams (Friendlies)
- Japan vs Haiti (10 October 2017): 3–3 draw
This match shows that Haiti can compete with Asian Pot 2 teams, even if it does not dominate them.
Best Pot 2 Options for Haiti
- Primary: Australia
- Secondary: Iran
- Tertiary: Japan
Pot 3: Where Haiti Has the Best Chance to Win a Match
Several Pot 3 teams would be very difficult for Haiti, including Norway, Algeria, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, and Paraguay. However, two teams clearly stand out as the most favorable based on real results.
Haiti vs Panama
Total Matches:
Haiti Wins: 8
Panama Wins: 4
Draws: 7
This gives Haiti a 60.53% win rate against Panama. Since 2009, the last four matches against Panama have been three draws and a 1-0 loss against the same Panama team that is going to the World Cup.
Haiti vs Qatar
Haiti defeated Qatar 1–0 in a friendly on November 18, 2010, and again 2-1 in the 2023 Gold Cup, giving Haiti a 100% historical win rate in this matchup. Qatar remains one of the more vulnerable teams defensively at this level.
Best Pot 3 Options for Haiti
- Primary: Panama
- Secondary: Qatar
The Best-Case Group for Haiti

- Haiti
Why This Group Works
- Haiti has a 31.6% win rate against the United States
- Haiti has a 60.53% win rate against Panama
- Australia struggles against counterattacking teams
- Maximum familiarity with regional opponents
Realistic Goal
4 to 6 points, which could be enough to reach the next round of 32 teams.
Best Alternative Group Featuring Canada
- Canada
- Iran
- Qatar
- Haiti
Final Thought
On December 5, Haiti will not simply learn who it will play. It will learn how realistic its chances are to make history at the World Cup. The draw will determine whether Haiti enters the tournament fighting for survival or with a genuine opportunity to reach the knockout stage.
No matter which group Haiti finds itself in, the team has a history of overachieving against bigger opponents. Underestimate Haiti at your own risk, like heavy favorites Costa Rica and Honduras found out in World Cup qualifying. It would be every Haitians’ dream to send a bigger opponent home, while we make it to the knockout stage and beyond.
